Before America’s rapidly accelerating moral free fall can be reversed, Christians must strive to apply what they say they believe, said Scott Alan Buss, who is leading a new discipleship Bible study in the Tennessee State Capitol.
“When we look at the cultural carnage piling sky-high all around us and we see how many things are quickly moving in the wrong direction, the rhetorical question that’s on everyone’s mind is: How did this happen? How could things in America get this bad so fast?” he said.
“If we’re honest and we actually believe what the Word of God tells us, then we know the answer to that question. We know that we’re where we are now as a culture because we’ve been disobedient to the Lord of all creation, which includes Tennessee.”
Buss was named CM’s Ministry Leader to elected officials and constitutional officers earlier this year. He is a legislative aide to Tennessee State Representative Andy Holt (District 76) and an author whose books include The Beginning of Knowledge — Christ as Truth in Apologetics and Fire Breathing Christians, among others.
Bible study leader is a role Buss is comfortable with and one he began preparing for years earlier when he sought out Christian legislators for fellowship and friendship so that they might encourage each other to grow in their faith. This longstanding informal email communication has now turned into a weekly sit-down Bible study that is sponsored by Rep. Holt and will be led by Buss.
“There’s a handful of us who’ve grown close and now, in the context of Capitol Ministries, those relationships have the opportunity to come together in a formal, officially stamped Bible study,” he said.
Still in its infancy stages, 18 legislators have expressed interest in attending the study when the Legislative session ramps up in January. Several legislators have seen reports of Capitol Ministries’ Bible study to President Donald Trump’s White House Cabinet and are eager to begin their own.
Part of Buss’ ministry will be discipleship and helping elected officials understand who Jesus Christ is and what He expects of his followers.
“In a political context, we’re not accustomed to thinking of Jesus as Lord. In our present political climate, people even tend to be hostile to the idea. I think that explains a lot about why America’s where it’s at today.”
“If we’re honest and look at the train-wreck of a culture that we have smoldering around us, we should be struck by the incredible price that a nation pays when its professing Christians fail to model true belief in the all-encompassing Lordship of Christ,” Buss said.
“We as Christians need to recognize that, and we need to repent of it. Before we point to others as being the reason for all that’s wrong in the land, we need to begin with ourselves and recognize that this culture can only go to hell as fast as we let it.”
“In this context, my mission is to encourage and equip Christian legislators to advance the Lordship of Christ in the political realm; to become disciples of Christ in every area of life and encourage the discipleship of others. Put another way, my mission is to encourage people to actually follow Jesus, all by His grace and all for His glory.”
