2 New State Ministries in Oklahoma and Arkansas!

April 2014

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Doug Melton has started his ministry in the Oklahoma State Capitol. A special thanks to State Senator Brian Crain for opening the doors to Doug to lead his long standing Senate Bible study (Brian will be leaving office and running for DA in Tulsa so please be praying for Brian). When we were all together recently in Oklahoma City we were able to meet with Governor Mary Fallin. Mary is desirous of helping by lending her name to “biggie size” Doug’s ministry to all elected leaders throughout the Capitol. This is a huge answer to our prayers; we praise God for this development! Be praying for Doug. God has set before him a wide open door!

We are also pleased to announce that Dr. Jim Lagrone has started his ministry in the Arkansas State Capital. Jim is well suited for such a work. Not only is Jim in relationship with many of the elected leaders in the state (he ran for Secretary of State some years ago) but is twice the past President of the Southern Baptist State Convention. Be praying for Jim as he ramps up and gets underway in Little Rock. God has set before him, too, a wide open door!

In the Senate Bible study, we drill down pretty deep. We spend weeks on end if not on a single verse, then on a single chapter, and several weeks on a specific passage to begin to understand intellectually. We, as politicians are naturally intellectually curious, and so to be able to apply that to Scripture with the benefit of good teaching, and the additional benefit of collective wisdom of the participants is very rich. The Bible study also allows us to drill down on theology and doctrine and application of Scripture. Perhaps the most important thing at the end of the day is that we have a source of encouragement, and a source of direction and a source of correction that is really important to the decisions we make as individuals and as an institution.

As CapMin’s Director of Local Government Ministries, I am seeking qualified candidates to establish weekly Bible studies to city and county elected and appointed public servants across the United States. I also led the first LGM Bible study to city and county commissioners in the greater Sacramento, CA area. I taught the curriculum, Oaks in Office: Biblical Essays for Political Leaders, which contains the most pertinent Bible studies Ralph Drollinger, President and Founder of Capitol Ministries, has authored to meet the spiritual, personal, and professional needs of Christian legislators over his more than 25 year ministry. Our Sacramento group is still meeting to study the Bible and we are studying Oaks in Office a second time.

The experience was exhilarating to say the least! None of us had any idea that the Bible had so much to say about immigration, parenting, racism, deficit spending, and other contemporary issues. One elected official had planned to leave politics and now he says, “No wonder God has me in this position!“

As Christians, we sort of take biblical precepts and doctrines for granted, but when the issues are broken out in specific chapters like Ralph has done in Oaks in Office, they become very clear and very real.

This first group was pretty excited about this study and will be sharing their story with city and county commissioners around the country. Who knows where God will take this?
