Meet Our Ministry Leader in Phoenix, Arizona

April 2012

This month I would like to introduce you to Erik Yielding. Erik felt the call of God to join Capitol Ministries and build a Bible-teaching/Discipleship/Evangelism ministry in the state capitol of Arizona (Phoenix).

Erik has been a chaplain in the military and recently completed his Masters of Divinity degree. By God’s design he used to work for Congressman Trent Franks and taught his children’s Sunday School class at Church.

It was there that Erik expressed to Trent that he was sensing God’s call to begin working with legislators on a spiritual basis — helping them to find Christ and grow to maturity in Christ. It was only natural for Trent to chat with me about this one evening during the Members Bible Study in DC.

Long story short, Erik now leads a Bible study with over 10 governing authorities in Phoenix! We praise God for Erik, his wife Andrea and their four lovely children. Be praying for Erik and the growth and impact of his ministry.

There are so many legislators in Ohio who are believers, but we all need that weekly inspiration from other men of God. Being a pastor myself, as well as a legislator, sometimes it’s nice for me to be fed instead of being the one who is feeding other people. I am thankful for everything Pastor Brian Hanson and Pastor Brian Solomon do.

I am thankful for everything Capitol Ministries does and for other CapMin ministry leaders in whatever sphere of influence they are working. Persevere. Don’t become discouraged. “I like what John Quincy Adams said, ‘Duty is ours; results are God’s.’ Sometimes you might not feel like you are getting through or accomplishing what you want to accomplish, but God is always at work whenever you are in obedience to Him.

As CapMin’s Director of Local Government Ministries, I am seeking qualified candidates to establish weekly Bible studies to city and county elected and appointed public servants across the United States. I also led the first LGM Bible study to city and county commissioners in the greater Sacramento, CA area. I taught the curriculum, Oaks in Office: Biblical Essays for Political Leaders, which contains the most pertinent Bible studies Ralph Drollinger, President and Founder of Capitol Ministries, has authored to meet the spiritual, personal, and professional needs of Christian legislators over his more than 25 year ministry. Our Sacramento group is still meeting to study the Bible and we are studying Oaks in Office a second time.

The experience was exhilarating to say the least! None of us had any idea that the Bible had so much to say about immigration, parenting, racism, deficit spending, and other contemporary issues. One elected official had planned to leave politics and now he says, “No wonder God has me in this position!“

As Christians, we sort of take biblical precepts and doctrines for granted, but when the issues are broken out in specific chapters like Ralph has done in Oaks in Office, they become very clear and very real.

This first group was pretty excited about this study and will be sharing their story with city and county commissioners around the country. Who knows where God will take this?
