Windshield Ministry Gives Legislator “Time to be in the Word”
When Rev. Dean Mathis began his ministry in Michigan in 2015, he learned that most of the Senators and Representatives that he was trying to reach drove to the centrally-located Lansing Capitol every day from their homes.
Schedules were packed with committee meetings and finding a time for a formal, sit-down Bible study was difficult. Undaunted, Rev. Mathis put his Bible studies on CDs and began a walking and windshield ministry.
By going from office to office, Rev. Mathis developed relationships and friendships with the Public Servants who welcomed his prayers, support, and the weekly Bible studies that they listen to in their cars during their drive time.
Among the 37 Public Servants who receive the Bible studies is Michigan Representative Ken Yonker, District 72. Here is some of what Rep. Yonker said in a recent interview:
“As legislators, our time is so limited, we are pulled many directions in many ways and it’s so easy to not be in the Word.
“Recently my Sunday school class asked how they could pray for Legislators and I told them to pray that we would be disciplined and have the time to be in the Word. Rev. Mathis’ Bible studies give me the opportunity to hear the Word of God when I have the most spare time – when I am driving.
“I listen to Rev. Dean Mathis’ Bible studies on CDs while I am driving back and forth to the Michigan Capitol. My district is in the western part of the state just south of Grand Rapids and I have a one-hour drive to Lansing one way.
“Rev. Mathis’ Bible studies are in-depth, to the point, edifying, and very interesting. You can read Scripture and be blessed by it and then hear a good teacher’s point of view and it’s so refreshing to hear something entirely different because it’s the living Word.
“I look forward to seeing Rev. Mathis when he stops by every week. And when I’m not at the office I know he has been here because I have a CD waiting for me on my desk. He is my spiritual support at the Michigan Capitol.”
