Like his Predecessor, Incoming CapMin OK Ministry Leader Will “Serve King Jesus”
As Dr. Cheyne Day assumed the position of Ministry Leader to the Oklahoma State Legislature earlier this year, he echoed the words of his predecessor:
“I want to serve the Lord well. I don’t want to serve a political party, I want to serve King Jesus.”
That was also the mission of Dr. Doug Melton who served as the spiritual leader to Oklahoma legislators for five years and during that time, growing the weekly Bible study ministry from six regular attendees to more than 30. Dr. Melton resigned the position he held part-time to take a post with the International Mission Board for the Southern Baptist Convention.
Pastor Day will create a full-time ministry with the objective of helping legislators grow in their faith, develop a deeper relationship with God, and expand the ministry to serve constitutional officers, Supreme Court justices, and other judges.
His ministry launch was celebrated recently with a well-attended reception hosted by Steve Green, President of Hobby Lobby at the company’s Oklahoma City headquarters.
In an interview with The Baptist Messenger, Pastor Melton discussed Capitol Ministries’ nonpartisan commitment to serve legislators, saying leaders from all parties participate.
“I am not an arm of any political party,” Pastor Melton said. “I am not here to advance any political agenda, I am here for the Gospel and to see people come to know the Lord and to be discipled and we have seen that happening.”
