CA Capitol Battle Cry: Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it.
When CM’s California Ministry Leader Mike Shreve sent his verse of the day by email at 6 a.m. as he usually does, he had no idea how the Scripture would resound with the 18 Senators and Assemblymen he ministers to.
Psalm 127:1, which was sent to the Legislators and 170 other people on Pastor Shreve’s CA state capitol ministry list, reads:
Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it. Unless the Lord guards the city, The watchman keeps wake in vain.
“I was bowled over by the response,” Pastor Shreve said. “Everyone I talked with that week said that Scripture really spoke to them.”
“The Senate and the Assembly are both called Houses, and so that verse made it very clear to the Senators and Assemblymen that any work they did to benefit the people of California would mean nothing if God was not at the center of it.”
“The verse became the battle cry in the capitol.”
The overwhelming response inspired Pastor Shreve to create a banner for the Legislators’ offices that displayed the Scripture over a picture of the Capitol Building.
Many, including House Minority Leader Brian Dahle, District 1, placed the banner above their office doors as a reminder of whom it is they serve.
Pastor Shreve delivers written Bible studies to 18 Senators and Assemblymen every week.
To begin the day with God, Pastor Shreve also texts or emails a Scripture accompanied by a photograph he has taken during his travels or on the many mountain climbs he has made, including worship hikes he leads for believers. An experienced mountaineer, Pastor Shreve is also known as Mountain Mike.
The daily verse is a good way to keep God’s Word in front of Senators and Assemblymen and their staff when the Legislature is not in session, he said.
“Many times I’ve been told that people are thankful to begin their day with the Word of the Lord,” Pastor Shreve said. “For the Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword.” Hebrews 4:12
Pastor Shreve also leads a weekly Bible study to more than a dozen of the legislators’ staff members. His ministry also concentrates on discipleship and evangelism.
