New Congressional Sponsors!

The Lord has added many new Congressional Sponsors to the DC Ministry! Thanks to a summer recruitment campaign to add ministry sponsors (many of them being Freshman) we now have over 70 elected officials who are standing with Capitol Ministries in our nation’s capitol! We praise God for what He is doing in DC; I have always sensed that there is a tremendous need for an in-depth Bible exposition ministry in our nation’s capital.

One of the Congressional Sponsors’ commitments is to partner with Capitol Ministries in order to help plant new ministries in their state capitols, as well as local and city county governments back home — ministries focused on reaching other Public Servants for Christ. With this in mind, several new member sponsors (who were former state Constitutional Officers) contacted us over the summer expressing their respective desires to introduce us to the Constitutional Officers back in their state with the prayerful desire of starting year-round ministries amongst their fellow former colleagues. Until now in our 16-year ministry history, we have not had that kind of access to State Constitutional Officers — now those prayers are being answered and those doors seem to be opening right in front of our eyes!

Be praying for the many new emerging ministries that are forming-up this fall for beginning in January of 2014. Those include, as I’ve mentioned before, new works in many of the New England state Capitols.

In the Senate Bible study, we drill down pretty deep. We spend weeks on end if not on a single verse, then on a single chapter, and several weeks on a specific passage to begin to understand intellectually. We, as politicians are naturally intellectually curious, and so to be able to apply that to Scripture with the benefit of good teaching, and the additional benefit of collective wisdom of the participants is very rich. The Bible study also allows us to drill down on theology and doctrine and application of Scripture. Perhaps the most important thing at the end of the day is that we have a source of encouragement, and a source of direction and a source of correction that is really important to the decisions we make as individuals and as an institution.

As CapMin’s Director of Local Government Ministries, I am seeking qualified candidates to establish weekly Bible studies to city and county elected and appointed public servants across the United States. I also led the first LGM Bible study to city and county commissioners in the greater Sacramento, CA area. I taught the curriculum, Oaks in Office: Biblical Essays for Political Leaders, which contains the most pertinent Bible studies Ralph Drollinger, President and Founder of Capitol Ministries, has authored to meet the spiritual, personal, and professional needs of Christian legislators over his more than 25 year ministry. Our Sacramento group is still meeting to study the Bible and we are studying Oaks in Office a second time.

The experience was exhilarating to say the least! None of us had any idea that the Bible had so much to say about immigration, parenting, racism, deficit spending, and other contemporary issues. One elected official had planned to leave politics and now he says, “No wonder God has me in this position!“

As Christians, we sort of take biblical precepts and doctrines for granted, but when the issues are broken out in specific chapters like Ralph has done in Oaks in Office, they become very clear and very real.

This first group was pretty excited about this study and will be sharing their story with city and county commissioners around the country. Who knows where God will take this?
