Pray for Nepal: Tragedy, Recovery, and an Exciting Ministry Opportunity

During the Worldwide Zoom Call last Friday, September 4, Kumar Praja, Capitol Ministries’ Director for Asia, shared a moving update on the aftermath of the devastating flash flood in Nepal.

At the time Kumar spoke, the tragedy had claimed 1,287 lives, with more than 5,000 people still missing. Kumar, who lives in Nepal, explained that the flooding occurred just 43 kilometers from his home and that some of his friends are among those still missing.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy. We mourn the lives lost and grieve for our fellow countrymen who are still missing. We are united in helping our nation recover and trusting God to bring healing to our land. We know that God is with us and will lead us through this valley of the shadow of death,” Kumar said.

Despite the devastation, Kumar shared that there is no reason to change plans or reschedule Capitol Ministries’ upcoming training conference in Kathmandu, September 28–30. The conference will gather Christian leaders from 19 nations who are eager to be trained and equipped to reach public servants with the Gospel.

Prior to the flooding, Kumar had a unique opportunity to present Capitol Ministries to the leadership of the Indochina Revival Movement. The response was remarkable: pastors and Bible teachers representing 10 countries approached him afterward, expressing their interest in Capitol Ministries and their desire to take a step of faith toward launching ministries in their nations.

“We had planned a small training in Kathmandu this September, but it appears the Lord has bigger plans!” said Danielle Drollinger, Capitol Ministries’ President. “The Lord is using Capitol Ministries in an amazing way, and we want to faithfully follow wherever He leads.”

In the Senate Bible study, we drill down pretty deep. We spend weeks on end if not on a single verse, then on a single chapter, and several weeks on a specific passage to begin to understand intellectually. We, as politicians are naturally intellectually curious, and so to be able to apply that to Scripture with the benefit of good teaching, and the additional benefit of collective wisdom of the participants is very rich. The Bible study also allows us to drill down on theology and doctrine and application of Scripture. Perhaps the most important thing at the end of the day is that we have a source of encouragement, and a source of direction and a source of correction that is really important to the decisions we make as individuals and as an institution.

A few weeks ago, members of our Hillsboro Bible study began discussing when life begins. To teach them the biblical perspective, I gave the members copies of “God’s View of Babies Inside and Outside the Womb” which was written by Ralph Drollinger, President and Founder of Capitol Ministries who leads Bible studies to U.S. senators and representatives every week on the Hill in Washington, D.C. Among many Scriptures quoted in the study was Psalm 139:13: For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb.

This verse points out that God is at work in the formation of the baby inside the womb, thus, life begins at the point of conception.

The next week one of the members of the Bible study reported that a voter had called to ask his position on this issue.

The candidate was equipped to share confidently his prolife stance as a result of the Bible study materials and our discussion.

Capitol Ministries Bible studies are helping upcoming leaders learn the Word of God in a way that brings out its applicability to our modern lives.

I am continuingly impressed by the applicability of God’s Word to our present time.
