“Is America a faith-based nation today? I think there is a debate about that because America has turned her back on her first true love. That is why in-depth Bible studies are so important for leaders at all levels. Capitol Ministries helps lawmakers relate Scripture to today’s issues.

“What does Scripture teach about capitalism—that’s a biblical principle. One of the 10 Commandments says, ‘thou shall not covet.’ How can you covet something if it doesn’t belong to someone else? You will also find in Genesis 35 where God demonstrated land ownership when He said to Jacob, your name shall be Israel and this land is yours.

“What does Scripture say about being pro-life? What does Scripture say about spending money you don’t have—all of these issues are important ones that lawmakers grapple with and they’re all spelled out in Scripture.

“In-depth Bible studies inform us on how to look at these issues from a biblical perspective. If we legislators have a scriptural basis for our actions and if our faith informs our decisions, I have to believe that God is going to lead us to a better solution than what we would come up with ourselves.”

As CapMin’s Director of Local Government Ministries, I am seeking qualified candidates to establish weekly Bible studies to city and county elected and appointed public servants across the United States. I also led the first LGM Bible study to city and county commissioners in the greater Sacramento, CA area. I taught the curriculum, Oaks in Office: Biblical Essays for Political Leaders, which contains the most pertinent Bible studies Ralph Drollinger, President and Founder of Capitol Ministries, has authored to meet the spiritual, personal, and professional needs of Christian legislators over his more than 25 year ministry. Our Sacramento group is still meeting to study the Bible and we are studying Oaks in Office a second time.

The experience was exhilarating to say the least! None of us had any idea that the Bible had so much to say about immigration, parenting, racism, deficit spending, and other contemporary issues. One elected official had planned to leave politics and now he says, “No wonder God has me in this position!“

As Christians, we sort of take biblical precepts and doctrines for granted, but when the issues are broken out in specific chapters like Ralph has done in Oaks in Office, they become very clear and very real.

This first group was pretty excited about this study and will be sharing their story with city and county commissioners around the country. Who knows where God will take this?
