Seeking Wisdom from Above in D.C.: A Conversation with U.S. Senator Steve Daines

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. — (James 3:17)
James’s description of heavenly wisdom deeply resonates with Senator Steve Daines (R–Montana), who recently shared in an exclusive interview how the Capitol Ministries Bible study is helping him grow in faith and lead with biblical principles.
“Think about the myriad of major decisions that we make in Washington and how we need God’s wisdom more than ever before,” said Senator Daines. “The decisions made here affect not only our country but the entire world. We’ve got to have God’s wisdom.”
Senator Daines explained that the weekly Capitol Ministries Bible study helps him stay grounded and focused on God amid the fast pace and pressures of D.C. life.
“One of the important impacts is keeping us accountable by being in the Word of God on a weekly basis in the midst of the chaos of Washington, D.C. We need frequent reminders—and in this case, it’s a weekly reminder—that God is God, and we are not.”
He also described what makes the Bible study unique:
“It’s meat. The doctrinal depth of the study and pushing us to exercise our minds is so important as we seek to love the Lord with all our mind. It helps us become better students of the Word—and that understanding helps us apply it in our lives.”
Senator Daines added that the group is open and welcoming to everyone, no matter where they are in their faith journey or what political party they belong to. The focus is on studying God’s Word together and seeking His guidance.
“It’s a friendly, humble group. Some members had never studied the Bible before, and they’ve flourished. Whether you’re new or experienced, there’s something for everyone.”
He summed up the Capitol Ministries Bible study with one word—effective—and expressed his gratitude for those who make it possible:
“We are thankful for Ralph and Danielle Drollinger and the sacrifice they make in commuting from the West Coast to Washington, D.C., each week to teach us. We’re grateful for their service and commitment.”
As Senator Daines and other national leaders gather weekly around God’s Word, we’re reminded of the importance of praying for those in authority—that they would continue to seek wisdom from above in every decision they make.
