Why do we take the Gospel to the political leaders of the world?
Why?
The answer is, quite simply, like many faith-based organizations, Capitol Ministries seeks to fulfill the Great Commission. We just go about it differently.
Rather than focus on a nation’s general population, as important as that is, our methodology is to reach a nation’s most influential people for Christ, its Legislators and policy makers. This is not because their souls are more precious, but it is because their influence is great and can be felt throughout society.
Our mandate is found in the Great Commission command in Acts 9:15 when the Lord reveals Paul’s mission when he tells a reluctant Ananias to find Paul and heal him:
…the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of Mine to bear My name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel.”
Tucked between the macro aspects of Paul’s calling to the large groups of Jew and gentile is the specific instruction to reach kings and the leaders of nations.
Paul takes his calling seriously. Healed and fortified, he sets out on missionary journeys and 14 of the 18 cities Paul visits are capital providences of the Roman empire — the seats of government. In many of them he planted churches.
According to Paul’s custom, he went to them…and reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and giving evidence that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, ‘This Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you is the Christ, Acts 17:2,3.
The book of Acts records the large numbers of people who were added to the Church (Acts 2:47), and it also individually records those in power who were reached including Sergius Paulus, the Roman Provincial Governor (Acts 13:7), Dionysius, an Areopagate Judge (Acts 17:34), and Publius, the Governor of Malta, (Acts 28:7).
Without 21st century technology, without the resources we have today, using only their strategy of reaching political leaders, these men turned the whole world upside down (Acts 17:6).
Capitol Ministries seeks to follow the example set by Paul who turned the world upside down, by making disciples of Jesus Christ in the Political Arenas of the world.
