The Board of Directors of Capitol Ministries is committed to protecting the reputation of this important organization and making sure that the resources generously given to it are used exclusively for the purpose of reaching and discipling the leaders of nations throughout the world. That is why Capitol Ministries is a proud member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA).
ECFA requires our ministry to abide by 7 Standards of Responsible Stewardship:
Doctrinal Statement: ECFA requires all of its members to subscribe to a written statement of faith clearly affirming a commitment to the evangelical Christian faith. And, we are required to manage our finances and other operations in a manner which reflects generally accepted biblical truths and practices.
Board of Directors and Audit Committee: We are required to have a working board of directors of not fewer than 5 members that meets regularly to establish policy, monitor the ministry’s accomplishments and to review the annual audit.
Audited Financial Statement: Capitol Ministries must have an annual audit performed by an independent certified public accounting firm in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America (GAAS) with financial statements prepared in accordance with accounting principles accepted in the United States of America (GAAP).
Use of Resources: All ECFA members are to exercise management and financial controls necessary to provide reasonable assurance that all resources are used (nationally and internationally) to accomplish the exempt purposes for which they are intended.
Financial Disclosure: Capitol Ministries is required to provide a copy of its current audited financial statements upon written request and provide other disclosures as the law may require. In addition, we must provide a report, on request, including financial information, on specified projects for which we have solicited gifts.
Conflicts of Interest: We are required, especially in matters relating to the board of directors, to avoid conflicts of interest. Our ministry’s board members are required to abide by strict conflict-of-interest rules.
Fundraising Practices: ECFA has a detailed set of standards—eleven in all—relating to how its member ministries raise resources.
