An Interview with U.S. Congressman Glenn “GT” Thompson (R–Pennsylvania, 15th District)

How has Capitol Ministries impacted your personal faith journey?

Congressman Glenn Thompson: I’ve been involved with Capitol Ministries from the very beginning of the House ministry in 2010 when Ralph and Danielle Drollinger first brought the Bible study to members of Congress. I was blessed to connect with them early on, and I’ve had the privilege of watching the ministry grow over the years.

My wife, Penny, and I were honored to host Ralph and Danielle in Pennsylvania, where they worshiped with us and visited several churches. During that time, I introduced Ralph to a close friend of mine, Jon Cassel, who eventually became part of the Capitol Ministries team serving throughout Africa.

It’s been amazing to watch how God orchestrated those relationships. Personally, the ministry has strengthened my own walk with Christ and equipped me as His disciple, but it has also been exciting to see how God has used those connections to expand His work around the world.

How have the Capitol Ministries Bible studies helped you grow spiritually?

Congressman Glenn Thompson: The studies are deeply rooted in Scripture and are presented from a practical leadership perspective. They help develop biblical leadership and encourage us to be bold in our faith regardless of where God has called us to serve.

For me, serving in the United States House of Representatives, that kind of equipping is invaluable. It provides the armor I need to face the difficult issues confronting our nation while striving to respond in a way that is righteous according to God’s Word.

Capitol Ministries isn’t about creating a theocracy or evangelizing government as an institution. It’s about equipping Christians to faithfully serve within one of the institutions God has ordained—the state. That calling applies both to those serving in elected office and to those working throughout government.

Is there a particular Bible study that has especially impacted you?

Congressman Glenn Thompson: Honestly, every study has been a blessing. In fact, I keep copies of every weekly Capitol Ministries Bible study in my desk because I regularly use them as a resource.

Whether the topic is abortion, perseverance under pressure, or other issues we face in public service, the biblical teaching has been incredibly helpful.

If I had to choose one that stands out, it would be Ralph Drollinger’s study on the institutions ordained by God—the family, the church, commerce, and the state. I’ve referred back to that study numerous times and have even used it when preparing messages for churches where I’ve been invited to speak.

That study reminds believers that we shouldn’t be intimidated by misconceptions surrounding the relationship between church and state. If these institutions are ordained by God, then Christians are called to faithfully serve within them. It encourages believers to be bold in living out their faith wherever God has placed them.

What would you say to someone who is hesitant about attending the Bible study?

Congressman Glenn Thompson: Randy and Paula Adams, who now lead the House Bible study, are wonderful people. They travel from the West Coast each week to faithfully serve members of Congress, and they’re incredibly approachable and encouraging.

The fellowship itself is refreshing. Of course, the Thursday morning breakfast is an added blessing—we all look forward to it. We break bread together, feed the body, and then spend time feeding our souls through God’s Word.

It’s a welcoming environment where people can grow deeper in their faith and be encouraged in the work God has called them to do.

Looking back over your years with Capitol Ministries, what has meant the most to you?

Congressman Glenn Thompson: I’ve been grateful to witness God’s hand from the very beginning of the ministry in the House of Representatives. It’s strengthened my own faith, equipped me for public service, and allowed me to play a small role in connecting people who have gone on to impact leaders around the world.

When I look back, I’m simply amazed at how God has orchestrated it all. It’s been a tremendous blessing to be part of what He is doing through Capitol Ministries.
