The Convention hall doors opened at the SBC annual meeting and pastors and church leaders began to flood the Capitol Ministries’ booth wanting to know more about how to launch discipleship Bible studies to city and county office holders in their neighborhoods.
“Doors opened and lines immediately began forming in front of our booth,” said Brian Hanson, CapMin international ministries global director. “SBC Conference participants were well aware of our ministry; they had an agenda and it was to seek us out.”
Some 11,000 to 14,000 people from Southern Baptist Convention-affiliated churches attended the 2024 annual meeting that was held recently at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis.
CapMin and SBC-affiliated churches have a lot in common including a traditional, historical view of theology, a high view of Scripture, depth of doctrine, and application of practice, and conference participants were familiar with our ministry.
Many participants had seen CapMin’s well-placed advertisement in the convention program that asked these mission-minded church leaders, “Who in your church would make a good disciple maker across the street at City Hall?”
Information about CapMin and our ministry was also displayed on main screens in the conference area, and last year, CapMin teams explained our mission to conference goers at the SBC national conference and regional conferences around the U.S.
CapMin also had a valuable asset in Dr. Randy Covington, Executive Director/Treasurer of the SBC’s Alaska Baptist Resource Network, who spent some time at the booth explaining our mission to visitors. Well acquainted with CapMin, Dr. Covington teaches the weekly Bible study to Alaska legislators.
Manning the booth was Pastor Hanson; Pastor Matt Goodsell, North America global director; Pastor Cheyne Day, Arkansas ministry leader; and Pastor Brian Solomon, global director of training. Pastors Hanson and Solomon also co-lead a ministry to Ohio legislators and Pastor Goodsell leads a ministry to Missouri legislators, aides, and Capitol staff.
“Since our theology aligns so similarly with that of the SBC, it was a joy to speak with so many people and not have to take the time to do a deep dive into the subject of theological alignment,” Pastor Hanson said. “Although we are highly interested in that subject, the conversations at the SBC conference were easier and faster. It was truly a breath of fresh air.”
While the annual SBC conference draws most participants from the United States, people also come from every corner of the world. Having access to a wide range of participants provided a great advantage for the CapMin team who were there to recruit partners to build Local Government Ministries (LGM) to city and county office holders in neighborhoods across the U.S., seek ministry leaders for states that do not have them, and recruit ministry leaders for foreign nations.
Among the comments the CapMin team heard were:
“This is exactly what we have been looking for!”
“Why is this the first I have heard of a ministry like this?”
“We have people in our church who would be wonderful with this ministry!”
“May I help in this ministry in the country of Ghana?”
In all, nearly 80 people signed up to learn more about partnering with us to establish ministries to political public servants. “We are in the process of following up with those potential recruits,” Pastor Hanson said. “We’ll soon see who God allows us to run beside for the years to come.”
“Capitol Ministries puts a lot of time, effort, and resources into recruiting Godly and qualified men to join our ministry. We look hard and deep to find men with like-minded views and alignment.
“Having said that, God has been so good at opening doors to qualified men all around the world and our ministry is expanding at a very healthy pace.”
