Steve Flandorp—Gifted Pastor, Bible Teacher, Businessman, Leader, named CapMin Global Director for Africa
Pastor Steve Flandorp, a strong Bible teacher who is skilled in ministry, administration, business, and leadership, has been named our global director for Africa to oversee CapMin’s expansion on the continent that already has discipleship ministries to political leaders in 29 nations.
Pastor Flandorp, who assumed the post Jan 1, said Africa holds a unique role in CapMin’s objective to fulfill the Great Commission through our mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ in the political arena throughout the world.
“I believe that Africa is key in the spreading of the Gospel across the world as Christianity has been in decline in many Western nations,” Pastor Flandorp said. “CapMin’s discipleship model is a key part of the change in the trajectory of the continent and ultimately the world.”
Pastor Flandorp will be replacing Jon Cassel, a long-time Africa missionary whose significant administrative and networking skills are greatly responsible for the planting of 30 ministries in African nations. Cassel has been named assistant global director of Africa as well as international assistant global director. In this strategic dual role, Cassel will serve where he is most needed and CapMin will greatly benefit from his abundant organizational skills.
Since he was named ministry leader in 2022, Pastor Flandorp has led a CapMin Bible study for national leaders in his home country of South Africa.
In making the announcement, Ralph Drollinger, president and founder of Capitol Ministries, said, “What Steve brings to us is the fulfillment of our need for someone who is an African himself and has an exemplary federal capitol ministry to shepherd the 29 existing federal capitol ministries that God has already planted on the continent under Jon’s fine pioneering leadership. Steve is abundantly qualified for this position and we are blessed to welcome him as global director.”
Pastor Flandorp is the senior pastor of the Cape Gateway International Church that he and his wife Louise planted 30 years ago. He is a graduate of Cape Bible Training College. A successful businessman, Pastor Flandorp has worked as the head of an investment initiative between the South African government and Eskom, an electric utility company.
He pursued a career in Electrical Engineering for one year and completed a diploma in business management from the University of South Africa. In 1995/96, he studied economic development at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA, while he continued to focus on international fixed foreign direct investment. He holds certificates and diplomas in marketing, entrepreneurship, governance, management, finance, administration and leadership.
Pastor Flandorp is the president of the growing International Fellowship of Churches and the regional hub leader of Movement Day Africa, Southern Region. He holds advisory and directorship roles with several organizations, including SCF Project Consulting, and several non-government groups, including Keep the Dream 308 Foundation and Hope Africa Collective.
He began a Fellowship of Churches Bible school and taught there for many years. He has presented the Gospel to church leaders, political leaders, and aspiring leaders in church settings, as well as in business leadership camps, and government chambers. Pastor Flandorp has ministered and taught God’s Word to leaders at international conferences in many parts of Africa, the Caribbean, and the United States.
Pastor Flandorp and his wife, Louise are both second-generation pastors and church planters who have a passion to mobilize the church to transform the communities where they live and work. They have four adult children.
As Africa global director, Pastor Flandorp embraces CapMin’s commitment to establish discipleship Bible studies to political leaders at all levels of government and is eager to fulfill this objective throughout the continent.
“It is vital to disciple new politicians starting their political careers at the local ward council, metro, and provincial level before they grow into a national role,” he said.
“I aspire to see political leaders grounded in Scripture and mature in their walk and convictions so that Proverbs 29:2 may be fulfilled—When a wicked man rules, people groan, but When the righteous increase, the people rejoice. May this be fulfilled for South Africans and ultimately all nations in Africa.”
With his business background, Pastor Flandorp believes Africa can benefit from the fulfilling of this Proverb in tangible ways.
“Africa is facing a paradox,” he said. “We have the largest Christian population and we are resource rich, yet our gross domestic product is poor. I believe as we raise biblically sound political leaders, this picture is bound to change.
“As our leaders become more courageously ethical, instead of cheaply and unethically disposing of our rich resources, we will benefit from the raw materials being beneficiated and exported as value-added products.
“It is critical that the decisions of political leaders are guided and led by their biblical foundations. Without the truth of God’s Word embedded in the hearts and minds, their decisions will be flawed and their characters will be challenged.”
