Throughout the year in the Minnesota State Capitol (both in session and out), a group of twenty-something-year-old legislative assistants meet with CapMin’s State Ministry Leader Gene Sipprell to study the Bible. These young men have worked with Gene to complete a study of Capitol Ministries’ Elected in Eternity: Prologue Bible Studies to Oaks in Office. They’ll go on to start on Ralph Drollinger’s weekly Bible studies as they seek application of the profound truths of Scripture to their public service work.
“The weekly studies provide opportunities for me to engage their state senators with biblical information,” Gene says. His influence in the Capitol has led to being asked to open the Minnesota House session in prayer twice, once by a Democrat and once by a Republican.
Gene has served as State Ministry Leader in Minnesota since 2022. He also began a weekly Bible study for local elected leaders in his hometown of Chaska, MN, at about the same time. In 2023, Gene was named Local Government Ministries (LGM) Midwest Regional Director along with co-director Nate Belkstrom. The two men share the responsibilities of recruiting Bible teachers to establish discipleship ministries to city and county public servants in the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Ohio, and Kentucky. He has had the opportunity to participate in training men for LGM around the country.
Gene’s ministerial experience has been widely varied. He earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. At the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall, he was serving in West Germany as a missionary. For 21 years, he has also served as campus pastor of Presbyterian Homes. Gene and his wife Lowie have 2 adult sons both of whom were adopted from Russia.
As a Bible teacher to young and not-so-young, Gene helps Capitol Ministries to fulfill its mission of Making Disciples of Jesus Christ in the Political Arena Throughout the World.
